Friends of the Leverett Library

About the Friends of Leverett Library

The Friends of Leverett Library are active in supporting the Library in a variety of ways.  According to the Bylaws, the group was organized to “maintain an association of persons interested in books and libraries and to focus public attention on library services, facilities and needs.”  The group is a 501c3 non-profit organization that has been active since the early 1990’s.  We welcome new members.

A primary goal of the Friends is to augment the Library budget.  We raise funds through an annual membership drive, donations, and fundraising activities such as the sale of tee shirts, tote bags, mugs, and puzzles, all with a Leverett identity.  These items are available at the Library

Each year funds raised by the Friends of Leverett Library are used to support the Library and provide services to its patrons.  The Friends:

  • Contribute money to support programming for children and adults, including speakers, story hours and summer reading programs.
  • Provide the library with funds for equipment beyond what the regular budget provides, such as magazine display racks, a color copier for staff use, and the outdoor sign announcing upcoming events.
  • Purchase Museum Passes for use by patrons.
  • Work with the Library Director to compile and post a quarterly listing of all New Books acquired by the Library.

The Friends activities are coordinated by a seven member Board.  The Board meets as needed, with an Annual Meeting of all members in the fall with a guest speaker.

Annual Report

Friends of Leverett Library  Annual Report July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014

The Friends of Leverett Library support the town library in ways that fall outside of the purview of the town and state funding.  From July 2013 to June 2014, the following served on the board: D’Ann Kelty, president; Lorna Rivers, vice-president; Laurel Kahn, treasurer; Leslie Fisette, secretary; Fenna Lee Bonsignore, Judy Hobart, and Joanne Mully, members at large, and Sue LaClaire as library representative. Ashley Blais is our library director.

The Friends raise money through memberships, special events and donations. As of May 2014, we had 198 members including 56 lifetime memberships. Again this year, Fenna Lee, aided by the other members of the board, donated baskets that were auctioned at the holiday season. We also sold coffee and donuts at the annual town meeting. In June we were pleased to learn that a member has offered a $1000 donation for a special project if we are able to match the funds. This has been designated as a special challenge for the coming months.

The Friends provided funds to the Library Director for programming expenses including computer workshops, author events, Read it Leverett programs, art workshops and children’s programs.  The Friends also purchased the following items for use in the library:  Legos for Lego Club, a movie license for Leverett Movie Night, continued museum passes for patron use, a digital camera for library use, magnetic letters for the outdoor sign and storage boxes for them. We replaced the “open” flag and flagpole and purchased seven seasons of the popular “Foyle’s War” series on DVD. We are in the process of remaking a DVD of Leverett history.  Our annual meeting in October was enhanced by a reading and talk by local author Gerald McFarland.
