Friends of the Leverett Library

About the Friends of Leverett Library

The Friends of Leverett Library are active in supporting the Library in a variety of ways.  According to the Bylaws, the group was organized to “maintain an association of persons interested in books and libraries and to focus public attention on library services, facilities and needs.”  The group is a 501c3 non-profit organization that has been active since the early 1990’s.  We welcome new members.

A primary goal of the Friends is to augment the Library budget.  We raise funds through an annual membership drive, donations, and fundraising activities such as the sale of tee shirts, tote bags, mugs, and puzzles, all with a Leverett identity.  These items are available at the Library

Each year funds raised by the Friends of Leverett Library are used to support the Library and provide services to its patrons.  The Friends:

  • Contribute money to support programming for children and adults, including speakers, story hours and summer reading programs.
  • Provide the library with funds for equipment beyond what the regular budget provides, such as magazine display racks, a color copier for staff use, and the outdoor sign announcing upcoming events.
  • Purchase Museum Passes for use by patrons.
  • Work with the Library Director to compile and post a quarterly listing of all New Books acquired by the Library.

The Friends activities are coordinated by a seven member Board.  The Board meets as needed, with an Annual Meeting of all members in the fall with a guest speaker.

Annual Report of the Friends of Leverett Library, July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012                                                           The Friends of the Leverett Library is an organization that acts to support general operation of the town library in ways that fall outside of the purview of the town and state funding.  A member of the board attends the Library Trustees meetings to assure continuity between the two groups.  From July 2011 to June 2012, the following people served on the board:  Lorna Rivers, president; D’Ann Kelty, vice-president; Judy Hobart, treasurer; Mary Franks, secretary; Laurel Kahn, Charlotte Battisti, members at large, and Sue LaClaire as library representative.  In November 2011, Joanne Mully and Leslie Fisette joined, Leslie as secretary.  Joan Patterson and, later, Charlotte resigned.  We appreciate their hard work with this group.                                                                       Fund Raising:  Memberships have been sold and the tally as of May 2012 is 54 lifetime memberships and 49 regular memberships, totaling 164.  We have sold mugs and T-shirts and bags with Leverett library logos. In addition, Fenna Lee Bonsignore donated baskets that were auctioned at the holiday season again this year. Memorial donations as well as a hand-made quilt donated for raffle by Robert Walker added to our income. Endowment guidelines
were approved in November 2011. Funded:  The library director was given $800.00 as a “stipend” to spend to augment library expenditures for the year.  The Friends purchased the following items for use in the library:  bulletin board for lobby, banner for friends, folding table, Canon copier, outside bench, new book shelving under the front desk, chair mats for the office area, continuation of museum passes, clear acrylic poster stand and acrylic sign holders. A contribution coordinated with the Summer reading program was made to Julie Collier of “Wingmasters.”
