Friends of the Leverett Library

Information about the Friends, and how to join them.
December 2009 Online Letter

In April and May The Friends hosted two very interesting speakers as part of our Local Authors and Artists Programs that are supported in part by a Leverett Cultural Council Grant, part of the Massachusetts Cultural Council. First was Don Kroodsma who showed us how to use his birdsong guide which proved to be lots of fun. He also slowed down several birdsongs so we could see the sonograms of their songs. He very generously donated $5 to the Friends for each of his books that were purchased.

Our second speaker was our own Steve Adams who spoke about his work as a screenwriter.  The library owns a copy of “his” movie Envy. A very entertaining evening and a look into what goes into a screenplay helped the audience appreciate how much work must be accomplished before a movie hits the screen.

Our third speaker will be Archer Mayor, Vermont author of the Joe Gunther series, on Wed. Sept. 2 at 7:30 in the community room at the library. He will talk about his new book due out this fall and answer questions about writing. Archer’s presentations are always fun.

Our annual meeting will be held in October, although the date has not been set. Leverett’s Dean Cycon, of Dean’s Beans fame, will be our main speaker. Watch for posters on the Library doors for both programs.

2009 memberships for the Friends are due. Registration slips are available at the library and there is more information at the Friends Link from the Library’s website. Booklists (although somewhat late due to a lazy president) are also available on the website.

About:

The friends of the Leverett Library are active in supporting the Library and Librarian. There are many ways you may help with this support.

We are always looking for fundraising projects, or for speakers, especially local authors who might be interested in being considered for speaking at our annual meeting.

The Friends Board consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and 2-4 Members at Large. We meet, when necessary, plus one annual meeting in the fall with a speaker. the public is invited to the annual meeting. We are always looking for people who would like to be involved in this group, especially those with "great" ideas.

One of our new projects is to maintain a list of volunteers to deliver books to the homebound. This is a new project and one we would like to receive comments on it.

Please let us know of comments and suggestions you have that we might look into.

Officers:

Lorna Rivers, President

Joan Patterson, Vice President

Mary Franks, Secretary

Judy Hobart, Treasurer

Charlotte Battisti, Edie Field, Laurel Kahn, Members at Large
